The World Travel Awards have once again honoured the Algarve’s internationally renowned beaches. The popular southern Portuguese coastal resort was named “Europe’s Leading Beach Destination” for a 10th time – more than any other destination, according to regional tourism authorities.
Extending along 200 kilometres of picturesque coastline, the Algarve is home to more than 100 beaches, including 88 with the coveted “Blue Flag” designation.
Welcoming the latest award, Algarve Tourism Bureau president André Gomes said, “We are honoured and delighted to have won this award for the 10th time. It’s a real privilege for the region to have been recognised as Europe’s leading beach destination, and to be making history this way.
“The Algarve has beaches to suit all tastes. From long, sandy beaches protected by golden cliffs to small bays nestled between rocks, and the calm waters of the east coast beaches like Manta Rota and Altura, which are perfect for families. Meanwhile, the west coast areas of Amado, Bordeira and Monte Clerigo have some of the most scenic and uncrowded beaches in the country and are a go-to destination for surfers. There are also famous beach resort towns such as Albufeira, Lagos and Vilamoura, all with fine beaches.
“And complementing the beaches, we have a rich culture and tradition, with a long history of fishing, agriculture, crafts and gastronomy that has been shaped and influenced by the Algarve’s long Atlantic coastline, Moorish ancestry and sunny climate.”
During the European ceremony, held in Batumi (Georgia) and marking the World Travel Awards’ 30th anniversary, Portugal also received the ultimate accolade as “Europe’s Leading Destination”.
Award-Winning Golf Attractions
Apart from beaches, Portugal ia also internationally recognised for its golf courses and resorts. This was highlighted during the 2023 World Golf Awards in Abu Dhabi, where Portugal was named as “Best Golf Destination in the World” and “Best Golf Destination in Europe”.
In the continental sections of the awards, Quinta do Lago in the Algarve was recognised as “Europe’s Best Golf Venue” and the resort’s South Course as “Europe’s Best Golf Course”.
Commenting on the distinctions, the Visit Portugal website noted, “Playing golf in Portugal remains in the memories of all those who try it. And why? Excellent courses in stunning settings, a mild climate all year round and the friendly welcome given to golfers.
“It’s hard to find a better destination for a golfing holiday. Chosen by the World Golf Awards as the ‘Best Golf Destination in Europe’ for six years in a row, between 2014 and 2019, and again in 2021 and 2023, as well as the ‘Best Golf Destination in the World’ between 2014 and 2018, and again in 2023, Portugal has a wide variety of courses (more than 90), with features suitable for the different levels of difficulty and the available budget.”
