During a press conference, Ryanair recently announced a number of new routes to and from Faro Airport, as well as plans to invest €100 million in order to create 12 new routes in Portugal. These new routes will come into place in summer 2019, operating from all of the airline’s national bases. This includes three new routes from Faro Airport, as well as three from Lison and six from Porto. The Ryanair investments come as part of the airline’s continuing plans to increase flights on a number of existing routes at all airports, with the aim of achieving 129 routes and 11 million passengers a year.
The three new routes from Faro Airport include flights to Berlin, Milan Bergamo and London Southend. The routes from Lisbon include Bordeaux, Clermont and Edinburgh, and the new flights from Porto will include Alicante, Brive, Cagliari, Marrakech and Seville. In his announcement the Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary stressed the importance of cooperation and outlined the benefits of these new routes and investments, noting, “It is important that we continue to invest here in Portugal, that we continue to create good jobs for people, and that we reach an agreement with unions.”
Ryanair has also recently begun to launch the first of five new routes from Faro Airport as part of the winter flight schedule. This includes a twice-weekly route from to Faro to Marseille which was inaugurated on 31 October this year. This will soon be followed by four upcoming routes to Milan Bergamo, Cork, Berlin and Cologne.
