The 13th edition of Sagres’ Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival is scheduled to be held from 1 to 5 October.
According to the organisers, the popular annual Algarve event will include a packed program of mostly free activities, for all ages and tastes. These include birdwatching and bird-ringing sessions, history-themed guided tours, field trips, boat tours, talks and environmental education workshops, hikes, photography courses and dolphin-watching.
The schedule is now available on the festival website, and registration for activities will be open online on 1 September, allowing visitors to plan their holiday stays according to the events that most appeal to them and their families or accompanying friends.
Autumn is the best time of the year for birdwatching in the Algarve. Thousands of birds fly over the region in October, on their way to wintering grounds. These include this year’s poster bird, the Northern Gannet, “which on a good day can be seen by the hundreds from Cabo de São Vicente. Easily identifiable by its long, white wings and pointed bill, this species is an excellent diver, submerging up to 40 metres when it torpedoes into the water to catch the fish it feeds on.”
